Q&A with Bride-to-be, Gabby

Today, we have the lovely Bride-to-be, Gabby chatting to us about how she met her fiance whilst studying to become a Doctor in the North East.

1. Where did you meet your partner?
We met whilst both working as foundation doctors in the North East. We started as friends, then things developed..

2. How long had you been together before you became engaged?
We’d been together for just under 3 years. I had been heavily hinting probably for about 2.5 of them.

3. Can you remember an exact point when you looked at your partner and thought “he’s the one!”
Actually before we started properly dating! I had been on a work night out and he was on a separate one, and I met up with him after mine. We then walked back to a friends house but I was struggling in my heels and having had too much to drink. Everyone had walked off really quickly so I was trailing at the back and Tom dropped back to walk slowly with me and help keep me upright. Probably because of the alcohol, I thought it was the most gentlemanly thing anyone could ever do and decided that we would become an item from there.

4. Where and how did the proposal take place? Was it expected or a complete shock?
Tom had arranged a weekend away for my birthday after I’d asked for a surprise for my birthday. We’d been talking about getting married for a while and I had been heavily hinting but I had also previously told him I wouldn’t have wanted to get engaged on my birthday. Anyhow, we went to stay in a lovely B&B in the Lake District with a Michelin star restaurant attached and had a lovely dinner the night before my birthday. On my birthday we decided to go on a long walk up Grisedale pike and half way up, he got down on one knee and proposed. I was quite shocked as despite all our discussion, I thought we’d still be waiting some time! It was a lovely day with perfect views and walking in the Lake District is our thing so I wouldn’t have had it any other way!

5. What does marriage mean to you?
To me, it’s a partnership and commitment to someone I want to spend the rest of my life with, to build my family with and share everything with. I look forward to having my best friend by my side for the rest of my life, through the good and the bad!

6. Did you both have the opportunity to meet each other’s families before the engagement?
Yes we have been away and stayed with each other’s families numerous times and all get along very well. Our parents have only met each other on one occasion but they seemed to get along too! We all live on opposite sides of the country so it’s sometimes a bit difficult to coordinate.

7. Have you always had a set idea of how you’d like your wedding day or are you open to ideas?
Like any girl, I’ve dreamed of my wedding and I always thought I’d be quite particular about what I wanted but actually I’m very easy. I am very open to ideas and think our wedding will probably be a bit of a mash up of many different styles! Tom is a bit more particular if anything – perhaps even a budding groomzilla!

8. Are you planning a small intimate ceremony or a large wedding?
We’re planning a medium sized wedding, with around 80-90 guests in the day – that’s if all goes to plan with COVID19.

9. Have you enjoyed wedding planning so far?
I’ve found planning to be pretty stress free actually! We haven’t yet finished so we will see if it becomes more stressful. We’ve been quite fortunate to win a few Instagram wedding competitions that have been a big relief in terms of budgeting as I’m still on shock about how much everything costs! I think our most enjoyable part so far has been going to look at venues and decide which one is most ‘us’. We’d actually went to see 5 in one day so it was quite a long day but a nice experience to share together.
I also really enjoyed picking music for the service and evening – I went with a few friends to see the band that we have ended up booking and it was lovely to be able to hear them live and share that experience with others who will be involed in our wedding! Most stressful has probably been dealing with uncertainty relating to coronavirus, though this is nothing in comparison to the poor couples who are having to cancel and delay weddings at the minute!

10. What are your future plans together?
Well we currently are living together in rental accommodation, so our next steps before our wedding are hopefully to buy our first home and to adopt a rescue dog. Then once we are married, we will be thinking about starting a family! It’s all very standard life things but exciting!

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today! We wish you all the happiness.
